  • Revolut vs bunq ZeroFX

Hi,
I'm going on a long trip to Australia next january. I was going to be using Revolut, but after the last few updates with the offline payments and the ZeroFX I'm not sure anymore.
I really like bunq, but Revolut was(or is?) the cheaper option.

What do you guys recomment when traveling to a country with an other currency for a long time?

Prefer bunq, because nowadays doing all my 🏦 stuff with it. Like the ZeroFX 👍👍👍. Maybe if you have some crypto currency that you would spend / manage, then Revolut is better.

@Marco#46371 I've been using Revolut when dealing with other currencies, but now with offline payments and ZeroFX I don't see any reason, other then crypto, for using Revolut.
Maybe just go with bunq and use Revolut as a backup?

Revolut has a Visa, so it could be good as a backup. But my bunq MasterCard works perfectly during my last trip in Indonesia. No issues with ATM's or paying in shops.

@Dominik#46396 no they did not, just checked and I can still order a visa.

@dennisklappe#46369 I've been to NZ and AU last December and January and used Revolut and N26 as I've only just started trying Bunq with the 250 EUR limit recently to see how much I like it. Considering the ZeroFX is the same Mastercard rate that N26 charges I think this is still relevant.

From my experience Revolut was negligibly cheaper during the week, but more expensive on weekends due to their surcharge. It was just a few cents per day on my trip, so I wouldn't make this my primary consideration. I would definitely discourage you from using Revolut on weekends and you'll want to use a timezone aware clock to see when it is weekend in London ;-)

As you can charge Revolut through Mastercard Debit for free I'd keep it with you loaded up with a bit of money as a backup anyways and I also like to use it in cases where I don't want to give out my "primary" Mastercard number to strange merchants like hotels or dodgy online stores when making online payments.

What I also like is that you can use the Revolut 200 UKP - or equivalent in other currencies - for free cash withdrawals, but as a Bunq customer this will only be relevant if you need more than 10 withdrawals a month, which is quite a stretch for AU; I used the ATM only once.

Re Revolut it is probably also worth mentioning their "disposable virtual card" as it might also fit my above use case very well, but I haven't yet made use of that, but the idea is pretty neat and I hope Bunq will maybe do something similar one day... but hey... having different features and functions is part of the fun these days :)
