• Where can I deposit cash in Germany and Austria?

The headline says it all! Thanks!

@Christian-Purple-Bear#47500 Are you sure this question is correct? The answer wouldn't fit in this screen. šŸ˜†

@Christian-Purple-Bear#47500 Cash... I have heard of it... apparently is existed in the past šŸ¤”šŸ˜‰.... but haven't seen it since šŸ˜‚

@Christian-Purple-Bear#47500 In my experience itā€™s the easiest way to top up your bunq account with cash, by actually deposit the cash in a German bank account and transfer it afterwards to bunq. If you donā€™t have access to a German banking account, you can deposit cash with a ā€œBarĆ¼berweisungā€ at some local banks without an account there, but the fees are usually very high.

Thanks. The question, however, was: Can I deposit cash direct into a bunq account like I can with N26 by going to a DM or REWE branch?
Cash, by the way, is still King!

@Christian-Purple-Bear#47565 No you canā€™t. The only way is to go to any bank (e.g Sparkasse) and ask them to deposit to your bunq IBAN. There will be some costs involved, unless you have an account with them.

They say Germany is still a cash or ā€˜Bargeldā€™ country but that will change someday. Iā€™m still waiting till the corner bakery and the butcher here will accept (contactless) card payments... would make life so much easier.... šŸ˜”

@Christian-Purple-Bear#47565 Cash is so much a king that I pay much less than 50ā‚¬ per month with it. Itā€™s pretty much only that baker and Dƶnerbuden not accepting cardsā€¦

Well, it seems you are all happy to be totally transparent and dependent on the good will of governments. I wonder what you would say if the government takes money of EVERY bank account and you canā€™t do anything against it - as it happened in Italy a few years ago or if you are profiled according to your buying behaviour. Just saying....

In any case: thanks for the info. I shall therefore keep my N26 where I can pay in cash at any DM or REWE.

@Christian-Purple-Bear#48292 And you think that's any different if you deposit cash at DM or Rewe to your N26 account? You'd be giving them a lot of info too. At least they know that you are a regular at those shops. Not to mention the spending you do afterwards with your N26 card. They might even start to wonder where you get all that cash you deposit... I think this is all very much tinfoil hat stuff to be honest.

As for the government issue, I think Germany and The Netherlands have very strong economies, so a lot has to happen before they seize your money. And if you read your news sources carefully, you should have already taken your money away by that time ;)

No seriously. I think banking and paying electronically and with contactless and Apple Pay really outweighs the concerns you mention above...
