I’d like to know for Germany: where can use Maestro, where I cannot use the Debit Mastercard. So where are the Maestro only POS?
e.g. Deutsche Post Filiale. Do you know other examples? Is there a map with POS?

Sorry for the late reply. 🙂
I think a map could be a nice thing but not very likely that this already exists or would happen. I would say Mastercard has a better acceptance in Germany than Maestro and also the Masterdcard can be used for online shopping. But that just my experience with it.
Maybe some fellow German 🇩🇪 bunqers can give you some advise?
@Lars-Olive-Kiwi#49332 There is no map for that. I live in Berlin and there are some places not accepting Mastercard but Maestro (often called EC-Karte). You can always use the Maestro where Mastercard ist accepted, so Maestro would be the better choice at POS.
@senlukas#49431 I agree. I don't know any location that doesn't accept Maestro. Even the Sparkasse cards are Maestro now. Mastercard however is usually frowned upon or not accepted at all due to higher costs for the merchant. Maestro is the way to go in Germany! Mastercard works better outside Western Europe.
@yllwfsh#49465 Don't forget there are still a lot of places that only accept Girocard, which means you are SOL even with a Maestro card.
@Roeshimi#49468 I don't know of any. At least here in Trier. Do you have examples?
The only places I know that don't accept Maestro cards are the shops that don't accept cards at all ;)
@yllwfsh#49470 There is a KFC near us that only accepts Girocard and also a cinema.
@yllwfsh#49470 For example the TÜV Süd in Langenau (beim Ulm) only accept Girocard. I tryed Mastercard and Maestro, both didn’t work.

Then it's time for them to get a new card terminal. Not the 1990's anymore 😉. What if some places get international visitors? I guess it varies locally.
I've only had positive surprises recently. Cashiers convinced that Apple Pay or for that matter Contactless wouldn't work got proven wrong 😄
@yllwfsh#49478 So I may give them your contact details and you tell them to get new terminals, right? ;-)
Jokes aside, I think this can only work when more people complain to them telling them to update their stuff.
With the Apple Pay launch, this will happen more often I think
@Roeshimi#49481 Yeah just a matter of a little more time i guess 🙃
@senlukas#49431 That’s not completely true, some german store’s don’t accept foreign maestro cards as they are actually only accepting girocard’s and MasterCard’s is my experience. Especially on railway stations, I almost got arrested once because I only carried my ING maestro card and had no other means to pay at the restaurant that had a maestro logo on the door. Luckily there was a lawyer in the store that knew EU law and quoted article’s about discrimination against foreign card’s under the same branding, predating SEPA. The lawyer said I was not to blame for not being able to pay, as I could prove I had enough money in my bank account.
The store demanded I would than pay in cash, but my ATM limit was already reached, so that was not possible.
So the lawyer proposed that wire the restaurant the money I owed them minus the rebooking fee of my train ticket, because I missed my train due to this, he did a calculation and came to the conclusion that it would cost the store more in fee’s than I still owed them, so the restaurant owner said to comp my bill. The lawyer asked how much tip was offered by me and the waitress and I double it and the restaurant owner had to pay it out of pocket to the waitress.
@Mat64#49506 Well, I never hab a problem like that and I hope that was an individual case. In my experience most stores today accept foreign cards.
@Lars-Olive-Kiwi#49332 Nimm doch einfach beide mit... 🤔
In Germany, the acceptance of both cards is given. Both Maestro and MasterCard. I have never come across a load that accepts only one type.
There will be plenty of stores that take maestro but not mastercard.
@Lars-Olive-Kiwi#49332 The best answer is probably: it depends. There is no proper answer for all of Germany, you have to look in your region what works best for you.
@yllwfsh#49478 Go to the Cinestar Cinema at the Sony Center in Berlin. One of the few cinemas in Berlin that shows movies in English, so a lot of international customers.
They only accept Girocard.......
