EliseLegend
Hi Petrik š
You can always contact us at support@bunq.com even if you're not a current bunqer!
We're happy to help any questions that you may have š
Have a great day!
How would that work if an heir is not aware of the account?
Yeah you need to make them aware š
But that's the same when you have a bank account at Rabobank or ING when you're relatives don't know about it.
ArthurProdigy
The dutch tax authorities are aware of all bank account a dutch person has in the Netherlands; youāll see it in the overview when you have to do your annual tax.
Same way I found out that I still had an old bank account with ABN AMRO.
My guess is, it will be the same when you do the taxes for a deceased person.
It's not actually. Lots of people just call up banks to ask if their deceased relative was an account holder there. With bunq, that's not possible.
Yes, one way to get around this is by informing them of the account.
But the (ironic) problem with bunq (more so than other banks).
Is that they provide no information to outsiders. You can't go to bunq and read up about procedures in case of death, legal seizure and other such cases.
The lack of transparency to non-bunqers is astonishing.

Hey guys,
Of course, when a family member contacts us about a deceased family member, we will help you out.
All of these cases will be handled seperately by our compliance team to make sure that you get the best and safest help there is! š
You can send an email to support@bunq.com in these cases.
Tuur,
While I appreciate you chiming in your answer is not helpful.
According to your logic. If I were to die in May (after the tax deadline of April 1st). My heirs would have to have to wait until next April to see my account show up in their tax overview.
Thatās assuming the account would even show up, which is of course wrong.
It wonāt because the bank is not aware of my death (and even if they were it still wouldnāt show up in a tax overview of an heir, this is an incorrect assumption on your part. The account that showed up for you that you were not aware of was because the account was in your name. And the banks report every active account in your name to the Belastingdienst).
The fact that the community doesnāt know also underlines my point of lack of transparency.
I canāt look something up. I have to ask to about it. And this courtesy is only extended to me because Iām a costumer.
If Iām not, Iām excluded from such privilege.
In Niekās original question Koen replied by saying that in the case of death the rightful heir should contact Bunq.
He didnāt mention how. Elise clarified by saying a non-bunqer can contact them through support@bunq.com.
Which is also not comforting, dare I say mortifying even (somewhat tongue in cheek), because this information can be found exactly nowhere for non-bunqers (again, transparency).
Community answers, while often helpful, are not the answers Iām looking for here. I understand that most Bunqers are young people with an edge for tech. And because of this they would not think that far ahead and thatās completely normal and natural.
And I certainly donāt want to discourage community dialogue.
However my question is specifically directed to Bunq as it can only be answered by them.
How does Bunq handle death? What is the full procedure regarding death? For heirs that are clients and heirs that are not. For those aware of the account of the deceased and those who are not aware account.
While ācontact supportā is a clear answered. As mentioned before. This information is not provided anywhere outside of this thread. Why is this information not publicly available?
If Bunq wants to be taken serious as a bank it would behoove them to show more transparency.
Presently, at least to me, it comes across as if they havenāt really thought it out.
I hope I can get serious answers in regards to this matter.
@Koen,
This answer was already provided by Elise and unfortunately it's not an answer to my follow-up question(s).

Hey Petrik,
You can do the exact same with us as you'd do with the other banks. Shoot us an email at support@bunq.com and we will ask you to provide the document showing the relative died and a document showing you are indeed able to ask for this information. (We're not planning to hand out personal details to others š)
After this, our team will let you know wether the person has a bunq account or not. If there is a bunq account, our compliance team will handle the case and make sure the money goes where it should (which is different for every case, depending on the will of the deceased).
As for the information to the non-bunqer family that is wondering how to contact us about this: You're absolutely right. These people have a lot of things on their mind and don't want to spend too much time finding the right procedure. Thanks for bringing this up, a pair of external eyes can help a lot in these cases š We'll look into it
