  • EC-Karte / Girokarte for German users

Will it be possible to provide BUNQ EC-cards for international entrepreneurs who do a lot of work in Germany? There’s still a large number of businesses here who don’t accept international Maestro or MasterCards ....

    EC Cards are end of Life since 2007. what you mean is girocard.

    Bunq will never give out Girocards. They are given out from German „Kreditwirtschaft“. And bunq is from the Netherlands.

    Even some german banks switch to debit cards from MasterCard.

    This will never happen.

      Thanks for the explanation, Jens! I’m still used to restaurants and shops around Cologne only accepting ‘Bargeld oder EC-Karte’ over the past couple of years- I thought it was a Cologne thing - but I see it in Bavaria too.

        It‘s in whole germany... I just don‘t go to such stores. They block the technical progress 😪

        The discounters like aldi, Lidl etc accept visa and MasterCard, so finally all others have to catch up

          @Leargorm-Pink-Leopard#59385 Often the Maestro card works at these places because most people don’t know the difference between a girocard or a Maestro card and call it "ec Karte".

            It’s not supermarkets- it’s typically cosy local restaurants, which are always a nicer option when on a business trip than eating in hotels or restaurant chains

              If a German waiter asks you for "EC-Karte" he/she means "Girocard". Then give it a try and present him your Maestro. This works often fine!

              Another option is to withdraw some money from the ATM before lunch or dinner.

                Its a typical german problem. I hope apple pay and google pay will „fix“ this problem😂 (kills finaly the shity girocard)😂😂

                  I created an Excel sheet with all restaurants in my local area and what card types they accept if they do. Still enough options to choose from without the cash or girocard-only stores.

                  But it took a bit of time checking out all of them to create it so nothing I could do when traveling somewhere. If information like this would be available in Google or Apple Maps (the latter has some info about Apple Pay availability which is a start but not really enough) that would be a great help. More people that write reviews should also include such information.

                    If the first is the case, it's going to take an unnecessary long time until they fade out.

                        @Rembrandt#59397 Yes, it’s up to the merchant which cards they want to accept.

                        And as many people, including merchants in Germany call all bank cards “EC Karte” without knowing the difference between Girocard, Maestro, VPay, Mastercard debit / credit, VISA credit or debit, they go for the cheapest contract: Girocard only.

                          @jho#59415 Funny, I'm from Ludwigshafen—been to Wittkoop again, recently (near 'Wasserturm'), they finally accept cards now, but unfortunately only Girocard. So there should be at least one entry for Mannheim ;)

                              Yes, they exist. We still have 2 department stores in my area that use Only Girocard Terminals. I had to leave my purchase at the checkout because I did not have my GiroCard with me. A little annoying, but then I just avoid this department store in the future.

                                Yeah, for me that's not really an option. I live in a small village and shops like the barber, the Gaststätte and some other shops just don't have an alternative anywhere close by. Plus - the girl in the barbershop that cuts my hair - and that I like - can't help stupid decisions from her boss. I tried walking around without any cash for a while, but now I am back to carrying a small wallet with me.

Überwiegend weiss ich, wo ich Bargeldlos zahlen kann (bin seit jahren kein Freund von Bargeld), seit ich bei Bunq bin versuche ich komplett meine Brieftasche daheim liegen zu lassen. Meine Smartphonehülle hat sowieso einige Kartenfächer, wo ich jetzt das nötigste drin habe (Personalausweis, Führerschein, Krankenkassenkarte), und zusätzlich noch ein kleines Fach für Geldscheine. Im Moment reicht das tatsächlich (abgesehen von Münzen, die liegen eh meisstens im Aschenbecher vom Auto weil Parkuhr).
                                  Kleinere Läden, die noch auf Barzahlung pochen, werden auf kurz oder lang aussterben, oder müssen auf Terminals umsteigen die auch mit Internationalen Karten funktionieren.
                                  Bestes Beispiel sind in meiner Gegend ein Barbershop und ein (wirklich) Winziger Bäcker. Beide nutzen das SumUp Terminal, und sind begeistert.
                                  Es wird (grade in deutschland) gefühlt ewig dauern, bis man tatsächlich mal ohne Bargeld sorglos das Haus verlassen kann, aber nur Geduld.
                                  Ein klasse Gegenbeispiel sind die Skandinavischen Länder. Selbst ein 12 Cent Brötchen kannste da ohne Probleme mit Karte/Kontaktlos zahlen (und das auch in Touristenarmen Gegenden).

                                    Korrekt – und meiner Meinung nach richtig so. Ich bin IT-Dienstleister und selbst ich habe ein SumUp und meine Kunden können mit Apple Pay bezahlen 😬

                                      @Emmo#59517 Ich persönlich möchte nicht ganz auf Bargeld verzichten, allein weil ich vielfach gerne Trinkgeld gebe wenn eine Dienstleistung ordentlich war. Dies ist vielfach (nicht nur in Deutschland) ohne Bargeld nicht möglich. Eine bargeldlose Welt wäre für mich ein Alptraum.
