Interesting to read the differences even within Germany. Here at my home city, every shop that takes cards, accepts at least this range:
GiroCard, MasterCard, Visa, Maestro. As VISA is being accepted Vpay may be accepted too, but it is often not shown at the door or the checkout. More and more retailers even accept Amex. I never experienced "GiroCard only" in the last two or three years, even my barber or bakery take MC/VISA.
