  • Full creditcard debitcard

Bunq doesn’t give credits and thus no credit cards. This is sometimes a limitation (eg: abroad, car rentals, etc).

I was thinking, maybe bunq can offer a full credit card, but with the “credit” prepaid. “Isn’t that the same as a debit card?”, in essence: yes. But you would get the advantages of a credit card.

For example, if you want a “credit” card with a €500 or €1000 “limit”, you need to pay this fee upfront to bunq. From then on, every purchase you make you will have to pay at the end of the month to bring your “credit” back to that level.

So rather than bunq giving you a loan to accomodate the credit card features, you “lend” it to yourself. Bunq doesn’t have to provide a credit, but you can get a card without having to worry about the limitations of a MasterCard Debit.

Just a thought. :)

Oh just to add, if you were to cancel this card you get the amount you gave yourself as a “loan” back of course. But not whilst the card is active as it is the buffer required for the card to act as credit card.

This could be easily solved with virtual cards... what is... i think, is coming in the near future.

this won't work. the thing with credit is: if you wreck your rental car and you're already maxed out, the company still gets all of their money back in the end because it's credit.

@jho#62839 I don’t think you can use those in a physical store like a car rental depot? Plus aren’t those still MC Debit rather than full-fledged MC Credit?

@Z#62843 Does that have to do with guarantees/insurances MasterCard provides or because of reservations...? In the latter case it won’t matter. In the former it might, depending on the terms.

              @LH-Black-Wolf#62845 Probably the first. When

                • the deposit won't suffice they usually take another amount. With a credit they are guaranteed to get it and you have to have proof to do a charge back otherwise your bank can't do anything.

for that reason they like to us credit cards. i've thought about what you're suggested too, but in the end I just got a credit card as back up. it's better than to have 1500 euro as a deposit somewere

@LH-Black-Wolf#62844 ApplePay/Google Pay is the magic word. :)

@Z#62848 Oh I fully agree. I would never participate in this myself either, I have a normal credit card. But since there are people that don’t want to, can’t get one or want to bank with bunq exclusively: figured it might be an option.

But in the meantime I’ve learned that the difference is a guarantee. MasterCard/VISA for the credit section have special arrangements with with car rentals and hotels for example (eg: you empty the minibar without paying, they can charge your CC; even if that means you would cross your limit). This doesn’t necessarily have to be a problem with the scheme I suggested, but it may be bunq has to take some responsibility in that area which they may not like to commit themselves to.

Either way, that’d be a consideration for bunq. :)

I think that would work. I used to do this actually. There are „real“ credit cards with no credit limit that you have to top up. So it‘s basically like the deposit you described. I would put 1000€ on it, use it and bring it back to 1000€ every month. Deposits are no problem then.

I think it‘s possible for bunq to take a deposit like this and in return give out a real card. But there may be legal implications and other considerations.

@LH-Black-Wolf#62836 Defeats the object of being called a credit card then. You should Google the meaning of credit.

@JakobDorn#62868 Nice, might I ask who offered those? :) Would be nice to see a feature list and terms of use for such a product to see how they did it. :)

@Omarchoo#62870 I know what it means, that’s why I put credit in double quotes and made a comment about debit cards. :P

It’s about the functionality so that people can relate to what I want the card to be able to do, what it would be called eventually or what it in essence would technically be is rather irrelevant. :)

@LH-Black-Wolf#62878 I was thinking about the DKB Visa cards, especially the saving accounts. These are basically Visas with 0€ credit limit, and you can spend more if you load them up. To be honest my biggest problem was just the UI, because I was constantly calculating my fictional deposit amount against the remaining balance. If I could set 1000€ as 0€ in the app and then get a negative balace when I spend money that would‘ve been my dream setup. But bunq is maybe different, they give no credit etc. so maybe they will never give out real credit cards for that reason.

"Secured credit card" is the term, I think. ;)

Personally, I might just get a "proper" credit card from another bank. Remember, you can usually still (ask to) pay the actual bills with your bunq debit card, despite having authorized a security hold with your credit card.

                                  10 days later

Bunq give this option it is required for many other various things I am okay with depositing 10k euro for getting a 5k euro CC

@BusinessAccount#65320 If you put 10K on a bank acount and connect your cardto that account it's (almost) like what you want. I'm curious on which occasions you ran into trouble using a debitcard instead of a creditcard. If only because then I know which situations to avoid.
