  • Bunq debit card not functional, credit works ok

Paying anywhere works, except for Dutch stores accepting only debit, eg Alfred Heijn, Coop, Kinepolis, ....

The help desk is helpless after several reports of failure and requests to fix the problem. Do you have functional debit cards?

Which card did you use and what was the error message? If there was none in the bunq app it is likely non-acceptance of the card issuer.

In the Netherlands the Maestro often works much better than the Mastercard(s).

To answer your question: Yes, my cards work fine, currently in Germany, I can test card acceptance in NL in June and September when I am on holidays in Hoogeveen.

My Maestro card works fine here in The Netherlands. Mastercard however is not accepted everywhere in The Netherlands. In most stores it's not accepted and you can better pay with the Maestro card. For online payments the bunq Mastercard debit card works perfectly as well.

Maestro works with all Dutch payment terminals. Mastercard only works in some stores (for example in Lidl, Aldi and some Jumbo supermarkets)

Hmm.. it reads ’debit’ on the card, but perhaps it is debit only through mastercard/maestro credit companies. Interesting. So, I should try the Maestro card. Or have both, Maestro and Mastercard. Thanks for the comments, lots of help!!

@Ville-Grey-Akita#63230 The debit on the card means that it’s a debit card, not a credit card. Therefore payments are instantly deducted from your account. It can lead to confusion in the Netherlands as bunq is the only Dutch bank that issues debit mastercards. Like the others already said, just go with maestro in the Netherlands, it will always work.

@Ville-Grey-Akita#63230 You can have up to 3 cards with Premium. So you can certainly get one Maestro and one MasterCard debit. Or two maestro’s and one MC, whatever you want. :) No problem at all.

The MasterCard can be used online and in stores where mastercard is accepted. Maestro cannot be used online (you can use iDeal though) and in NL is accepted everywhere you can pay with “pin”.

Good day. I ran into a similar problem at the Coop today. My physical Mastercard debit card did not work. Neither can I withdraw money with it from an ATM. My South African Mastercard works fine on the Coop point-of-sale and at the ATM though. I looked in the Bunq app and the limits are set correctly too. This is becoming a problem for me as I cannot reliably use my Bunq cards. It is making it more and more difficult for me to remain a Bunq client.

Have you used this card somewhere else before? Have you activated it in the bunq app? Is there an error message visible on the payment terminal or in the bunq app?
