My bunq card is not accepted by the majority of ATM’s... so far it only works in Santander and not in HSBC, banamex, bancomer.. is there a reason for this? My other Rabo and ABN cards do work in all ATM’s

I have the same problem. I've been in contact with support last summer holiday about the same topic. The answer was that the ATM's that didn't accept my card didn't apply to the safety standards. However, all my other cards (RABO, ABN, VISA) were accepted. As we travel for work and leisure regularly, we have to say goodbye to bunq if this is not solved a.s.a.p.
I really like the fact that bunq keeps my money safe and not adjusts to lower security standards that have been adopted around the globe sometimes. What I have done is keeping a Visa creditcard as backup which is insured for abuse. The Visa is connected to my bunq so if I use it the amount is taken from my bunq. With this combination I can always pay 🎉
I also reported before a Cashzone ATM here in UK works with all other cards, but bunq reject the transaction for security reasons as the ATM is poorly configured!
Do these issues occur with both maestro and master card, and have you enabled the relevant countries in your settings? I never had any issues abroad.
It's an issue with the majority of the ATM's, not all of them. I don't have a Bunq master card. I expect the Bunq maestro cards to work in all ATM's, like my other maestro cards from other banks do.
So why use bunq maestro card in the first place? And if lower security standards are the issue here, then that would apply to your credit card too ...
From my personal view I only want t spend money I have, so I try to avoid credit cards and always use Maestro.
I like the fact that bunq has a clear view on banking in the digital world and that can come with some inconvenience where it comes to very old legacy systems which are not always online. That's why I keep the Visa as a backup. Let's see how much I have to use it. Until now zero.
Would recommend to read Breken met Banken, that is a real eye opener.
Have a good Monday!
I am not sure if it applies to ATM's too, but you might have to enable the Magnetic strip on your credit card, you can do that in the app. bunq will know for sure if this can help.
I did have some issues with a few ATMS (in Geneva last year), but in Belgium and the UK I don't have any issues paying with my card (or using an ATM). Don't use an ATM that often, you can pay almost everywhere with your Mastercard of Maestro...
Thanks for the tip about the book @Marcel, I just ordered it....time for some old skool reading :)
I will be saying goodbye to Bunq soon. To much problems. Because i travel a lot, most terminals are offline and with Bunq i can not pay or withdraw there... Premium is not premium if basic functions do not work properly.
Hey Niels,
Our card should definitely not fail that often, it should even work on almost all terminals.
If you keep having this amount of issues, I recommend hopping by our support chat.
Edit: "almost all offline terminals" -> "almost all terminals", to be clearer
Hi Koen, your reply this got my curious. How does this work? Because in an offline situation the terminal cant check your account balance and bunq doesn't give credit. So, someone is taking the risk that the account balance is insufficient at the time the account is charges (can be days later). So, who is the risk taker in this case? And why would this party willingly take this risk?
Hey there,
Offline transactions can be done in several ways. We do accept offline PIN verification with Maestro (as the card itself has your PIN, although not the secondary PIN) but we will still need an online balance check.
As there are hardly any offline terminals left worldwide, of which most do have an online balance check, you should be covered on almost all terminals around the globe.
I'll change my previous comment a bit to be more accurate 😄
