So why can't they just assume that only a portion of the credit cards holds will eventually be settled (and therefore "leave" the bank)?
I have credit cards whose bills I have to pay monthly. Over the last 10 years I must have spent (let alone made "deposit holds") tens of thousands of Euros with them. If I don't pay the monthly bill on time in full, I would get hit by high interest rates. Yet I haven't even paid more than three Euros in total interest one these cards. And even the few cents I did, I did so deliberately (due to withdrawing cash). No problem at all.
Why can't they use it to earn interest? It all boils down to this question:
Jeroen 🏳️🌈 The shopkeeper does not have that money at that time either, it is just 'somewhere' at bunq
When I am making, say, a 1000 EUR CC deposit with my card, does the entirety of that money immediately leave the bank? (and where to? Some sort of escrow account?) Well, unless somebody can substantiate such claim with sources, I refuse to believe it. And if it doesn't, i.e., if the money is still "at bunq", then bunq can still earn interest on it (assuming interest rates were in positive territory), until it's eventually settled. Which only a portion of these reservations will.
But I will earn (daily) interest on it, if I leave it on my account overnight. Or for a couple days. Just the same as with credit card deposits, that might only get debited a couple of days later.
