  • Additional questions about bunq Travel Card

@JeroenE#97774 Maybe bunq support has no idea then and just said yes, yes and yes, when I asked if I would be able to use the Travel Card in Korea in shops where pin codes (and my debit card) is not supported.

@JeroenE#97777 No, I don't know how it works in stores here exactly. But after they tried to charge my card a few times, it was blocked. I assume because the terminal either does not send a PIN code, or sends a default PIN code, like 0000 or 1234, which is what I think is what technically is done with cards that do not have a PIN code.

@JeroenE#97781 I did see a declined payment, because if wrong pin code. After three attempts it was blocked. I was able to unblock the card in the app, but never able to make a payment in a shop - only ATMs.

Anyway, Support toold me that the case would be different with the a Travel Card, because your can make payments without supplying the pin code. And I'm not talking about tap&pay.

@JeroenE#97781 I guess we'll see. On my next trip, I'll be having the Travel Card. I've haven't been on a trip so far, with my bunq cards, without issues and troubles. I'm always relying on my traditional Mastercard CREDIT card from a backup back.

Can someone explain why the Mastercard Debit card still exists (you can still order it from the app)? If I am understanding it correctly the Tranvel Card can do exactly the same as the Mastercard Debit card, with some extra benefits (you can make an reservation on it for example).

Or are there any downsides to the travel card?

@Sven-Turquoise-Kiwi#97895 I asked the same question again and again but did’t get a satisfying answer.

I guess it comes down to some stores not accepting credit cards.

Ah ok, strange that there is no satisfying answer from bunq.

For the Dutch case there is no benefit then I think above Maestro (there is close to 100% maestro support in the Netherlands).

@Sven-Turquoise-Kiwi#97895 @Jochen#97901 there's a difference in the settlement. Your creditcard "debt" will be settled at the end of every month. The debit card will settle immediately. So on your account statements you will see a different value ("available balance"). In the end, as a regular consumer you won't notice this. But the cards are really different behind the scenes. 🙂

@Sander#97907 Yeah but bunq is all about UX right?

For the users it doesn't really matter is what I understand. Therefor it's in my opinion an unessescary extra choice to make as an user. Keep it simple bunq!

@Sven-Turquoise-Kiwi#97895 The plan is that in the near future Mastercard will stop with the brand Maestro. And thus only have one brand “Mastercard”, with two flavors: debit or credit.

                              That’s most likely the reason.

-Kunden wahrscheinlich sehr sauer, denn dort kennt man nichts anderes.

@Bernd-Cyan-Penguin#97955 Why? It’s the same when we changes from the local payment system “PIN” to Maestro. Now it will be a change from Maestro to Mastercard Debit.

Most likely, the banks will do the same as at that time, when your card expires, you’ll get a new card with both schemes, and when everyone has switched, only new cards with Maestro.

What really is a problem is that some countries still have their own local payment system and stick to that.

@Tuur#97962 What really is a problem is that some countries still have their own local payment system and stick to that.

Though that's not too different from the Netherlands, with relatively many stores that do not accept Mastercard or Visa. Many countries don't even routinely issue Maestro/V Pay cards (anymore).

Also, local payment systems offer competition and help keeping fees and prices low.
