• bunq options for my significant other studying abroad

My significant other will be leaving Germany for several months in order to study in Denmark. She is currently having a traditional bank account at a German bank and is also a bit skeptical about modern banking. For her stay in Denmark she is now wanting to get a credit card and thus I was looking for options at bunq of course.

I am a bunq premium user for a couple months now and very happy with everything. I wouldn’t mind upgrading to Joint so she can also use all the features bunq offers. This would require her to sign up for a free account at least or get a Travel Card, wouldn’t it? Or would it be enough for her to just get a Travel Card without me upgrading to Joint right now?

What do you recommend? I am actually a bit overwhelmed by the different options of free account, Travel Card (which is basically also a free account with a credit card?) and Joint.

@Wascha#98912 the Free plan is discontinued. It has been replaced by the Travel Card plan. (which comes with no monthly costs, just like the former 'Free').

When your partner only needs the credit card then the Travel Card plan sounds like a perfect fit. The partner can then top up the card and use it as normal. Of course you can also upgrade to Joint; the partner then also needs a bunq account that will be invited into the Joint membership. You will both be on the same membership with your own individual bunq accounts (and login credentials). 😁👍

@Sander#98915 Thanks for your reply and opinion.

So since Free is no longer an option, you now must have a Travel Card in order to become part of a Joint membership anyway?

I need it check the fees for the Travel Card in detail. Cash withdrawals do cost 0,99€ each afaik. And Apple Pay will be supported by end of July which would be fine time-wise. Paying in DKK is no different than it would be for me as a premium user, isn’t it?

@Wascha#98921 The first month Premium is still free afaik, so she can just sign up for Premium and then you can either switch to joint or she can find a pack to join (€5/month in a pack). Having her join a pack might save you some trouble.

@LH-Black-Wolf#98924 I doubt she is willing to pay a monthly fee for “just” a credit card right now and will prefer a free option. So I am afraid it’s either me upgrading to Joint or her getting a Travel Card by herself (which she might need anyway when joining Joint).

Makes me wonder what you downgrade to after the free month of premium when “Free” is no longer an option. 🤔

@Wascha#98927 You downgrade to Travel Card without any accounts and other perks.

@JeroenE#98930 For some reasons the translate function didn’t translate that but I figured out your message after all.

The Travel Card really seems to be a good option for her. I agree the “Invite 3 for free” is a bit strange but it helps spreading the word about bunq if done reasonable.

AFAIK MasterCard is a better option than Maestro in Denmark. Way higher fees with the latter one.

@Wascha#98921 So since Free is no longer an option, you now must have a Travel Card in order to become part of a Joint membership anyway?

You can directly invite a mobile number or email address. If the other then signs up using that number or email address (s)he should automatically get an invite into your membership. No need to already open an account upfront. 🙂

@Wascha#98921 Paying in DKK is no different than it would be for me as a premium user, isn’t it?

                    Correct.

@Sander#98957 Thanks for your replies. Is it possible to refer her for a Travel Card as a premium user and would I just use the “normal” referral option within my apps settings? But that would get her a one month premium which she would have to downgrade to Travel Card then?

@Wascha#98965 The free month of Premium you should also get when signing up normally. Added benefit of using your referal link is the €10 bonus for both once the physical card (of the invited user) is used for the first time.
