• The refreshed Maestro design

Hi everyone!

I'm Luca, and I'm a designer at bunq.

Today I would like to show you something that I personally have been waiting for some time: a refresh of the Maestro card. Without further ado, let's check it out:

In this revamp, we've taken the chance to make our cards more consistent with each other. The bunq colours are the same, the logos are the latest and greatest, and your personal info is now placed on the back of the card.

Similarly to the Mastercard debit, the front of the card is completely free of clutter, which allowed us to fill it with our beautiful colors. And in the future... who knows? ๐Ÿ™‚

This is a minor update, but I'm very excited about it as it brings our products together as we look to the future of banking, and the future of our cards. A more elegant Maestro for a more civilised age.

We know that there are many more interesting things that we can do with our cards, and we can't wait to explore them. Some of you have already mentioned a few, such as more personalisation options and more differentiation between the cards . We're always listening (I personally read together daily), so if you have cool ideas, experiences, stories, or a selfie with your new card, don't hesitate to share them here!

Hoping everyone's as excited as I am, I wish you all a nice day!

Kudos,

Luca

    Hi TImo!๐Ÿ™‹

Yes it will have the new design๐Ÿ™Œ

    Ready to show it off?๐Ÿ˜Ž

nice, but i'm already missing the bunq colors on the back! Luckely i have the old card still

Job well done Luca! ๐Ÿ‘ Lets shine some colors :) ๐ŸŒˆ ๐ŸŒˆ ๐ŸŒˆ

          Hey Mario!

First and foremost, thanks for the feedback! I would like to share some design comments on the reason for having a black back, which is twofold.

First, we really like it that way! It clearly denotes a difference between the colourful front of the card, and the more elegant back where your personal information is displayed. The pictures I shared above don't really highlight it, but the core (the material) in which the card is made is itself black, which makes the card really stand out from other cards even when you look at it from the side. ๐Ÿ˜

Second, with vertical cards information can get really small. Maximising legibility is very important when you don't have 20/20 vision, and overlaying text over different shades of colour can easily become hard to read in certain spots. That's why we opted for the maximum possible contrast of white over black!

I hope that my insider comment can shed some light on why we chose a black back for the Maestro and for the MasterCard Debit.

Clearly, as we move forward, it may be that we decide to try something else entirely, which is why I really appreciate all the feedback that we receive. bunq is all about change and progress towards what we believe is a great user experience โ€” so keep the great comments coming! ๐Ÿ˜Š

I think going for black is clever because like you are saying its create a good contras with the white text.. so you see quickly the differences between cards (even if you have already a good set of eyes).

I think I'm going to ditch my glasses now :)

I like the new design, thanks Luca, very clean and modern.

I could imagine many colorful designs, which could be useful if you have more then one card, with or without a black back.

I like the colors, but I'm more in the blue/green direction, so I like the upper left one ;)

              I did a little mockup:

What do you think? (I'm not a designer, this just illustrates the idea.)

Loving the new slick design! Now I only have to wait till 2020 to receive a new one ...

Zet me aan het denken, wellicht offtopic, maar is hier nog een magneetstrip op aanwezig en zo ja, waarom?

                    Ordered!!๐Ÿ˜Š

Just wondering... me and my wife uses the cool wildcard option to get a second Maestro. We got our cards last week. Did I understand that these cards were a temp one and going to be replaced with the crazy wild new one? Or is that wishful thinking :)

Great job; looking forward to get mine!

                          Do without/ renounce the *Debit*!

Makes it even more beautiful and attractive...

I get your reasoning, it's ugly and cluttering, unfortunately I believe this is mandatory to put on the cards for international reasons as far as the Debit MasterCard from bunq is concerned, though they could theoretically remove it from the Maestro-only card, as most other Dutch bank don't even have the word "debit" on their cards. (Looking at ING, ABN & Rabo to name a few) Only the Maestro logo....

Problem I have with this design is that the chip & logo positions should be switched. Now when I have the cards vertically in my wallet I donโ€™t see the logo unless I want to have it upside down. I donโ€™t, so that makes it hard to distinguish the cards.

Why does the card need to have a account number on it? Since we (Bunqers) have the option to bind a card to any account at any time, the number on the card is just there for funs and giggles. Is it a Maestro requirement to have it printed on the card?

I know of only one situation where the number on the card is used and that is when buying a phone subscription; they copy the card and you have to pay 1 cent via their pin terminal. No further vertification is done between number and PIN transfer; but whatever.

Very nice design! I really loved my master card design and I can't wait for the batch to arrive. When can we order the card?

I believe itโ€™s now EU(or EEA or SEPA council or who knows) or mastercard regulation to put this on all new cards. This because Mastercard now allows(or by aforementioned parties is now required to allow) merchants to discriminate between credit and debit cards.

So now they can theoretically deny a credit mastercard but accept a debit mastercard or apply a surcharge to the former.

Havenโ€™t seen it happen anywhere yet, except in Denmark๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿšฒโค.

This means all cards, even maestro (so merchant knows itโ€™s debit even if merchant doesnโ€™t know what maestro is).
