I see it that way: bunq never wanted to have a metal card, but in every topic the requests for a metal card come up. A metal card is environmentally expensive to create, so bunq counters this with planting trees. And then they add a high price tag — so the metal card for the people who always asked for it and need to show off. For the rest of us there is Apple Pay / Google Pay.
I’m a bit annoyed that I lost two hours of sleep, but If now all the stupid metal card requests stop and bunq makes some money off people who need to show off, then I’m fine with it.

To me it looks like this:
People requested a metal card to show off - bunq created a metal card (with a premium price tag).

The "green" capabilities of the card are a great idea, but I just did some calculations:
If I directly donate to a NGO, I can donate 176€ e.g. to https://www.plant-for-the-planet.org/ from which they will plant 176 trees.

The 176€ donation money equals 99€ regular spending for me, as it's tax deductible.
To match the 176 trees, I would have to spend 8800€ (provided I have premium) with the green card,

So in general, I am disappointed that there was this huge announcement which gives us zero new features, and that, as @thomba#135391 pointed out, the green card limits your freedom and only plants trees for those willing to spend 99€ to show off.

I would be happy to pay 10€/month for a bunq membership where my cards are "green cards" (not necessarily made of steel). The proposed no-physical-cards green membership wouldn't work for me because of ATMs.

It is so disappointing. I love bunq, I use it every day, tell about it, advertise, have stickers with the beloved bunq logo, I am excited about an innovative product connected with ethics and honesty. I've always been a proud bunq user and defended the pricing as absolutely fair. And now this action with great notice and absolute scrap. For the first time, I am ashamed of bunq. I am so disappointed, I almost miss the words.

Further to that, planting a tree costs 1$ for individuals at organizations like onetreeplanted. I assume that in Bulk it is much cheaper, let's be generous and assume it's €0.50, although most probably it's even less.

So now I order the bunq green card and pay €99 for it for one year. In trees, this would be 198. Now I start spending using my green card. Let's assume I use it quite a lot and spend €1000 with it a month. 10 trees planted. Makes 120 a year. So this way bunq even makes money out of my "donation".

-> No value for me. No value for the environment. Sorry, as much as I like bunq and as much as I would like to support something like this: No.

If you want to plant trees, use Ecosia instead of Google. I switched to it at my office computer a couple months ago and had more than 800 trees planted by using it. This is innovative. Selling a super-expensive metal card with no additional value by calling it green and donating a bit of it's price is not.

Further to that, I would even go ahead and say this is a mockery on those who seriously want to do something for the planet.

In stead of falling for a greenwashing marketing product, invest the €99 directly on https://edenprojects.org (Bunq's tree planting partner), it will give you up to 1000 trees (for which you'd else have to spend €100K!)
