• Travel card in Vietnam

Hi All,

Ive been traveling in Vietnam and so far I did not manage to withdraw money from a single ATM using my Travel Card, that is a master-credit one. I see most bunq users are using debit so looking to get some help with someone using travel-credit one. Had no issues paying at the post terminal with it but need cash as many places dont have posts’.

Tried most of the banks mentioned here and usually the transaction is declined, I had reached some daily limit or its not allowed.

A friend of mine has Bunq Debit and she is able to withdraw money although you need to test few ATMs before you are rewarded.

Ill be going to Cambodia and Thailand as well and would appreciate your help and guidance.

Support suggested to set my allowed countries to β€œworldwide” as this helped some user(not me).

Thank you

    @Dimitar-Green-Leopard#145656 You are aware that you actually need funds on your account as there is no credit behind the TravelCard? Just saying as you say people with debit do get to withdraw money.

      Hi Sam, thank you for this, the travel card is a pre paid credit card so I can spend the amount I have put in. I do have money in there and all the settings are in place but still cant withdraw. It might be that the credit ones are not a great option if you intend to use it solely in countries like Vietnam.

        @DU#145661 what does the event in the bunq app say about the withdrawal? It usually states the error.

          @TwitNour#145666 Hi Nour, nothing in the events for any of my attempts on the ATM. That would probably mean the transaction is cut out before it can reach bunq... I was hoping there might be someone that has figure this out... else I would consider the travel card (maybe any credit ones) good for posts rather than getting cash

            @DU#145671 I've been to Vietnam in November and was able to withdraw from BIDV and VIB using my Travelcard without any issue. They charged a little fee but I couldn't manage to find a fee-free ATM during my travel anyway ... Have you tried one of them?

              Hi @DU#145656 πŸ‘‹πŸ½

              I had a quick look and I can see there are ATMs accepting bunq Travel Cards. However, we are always on the look out for places where our cards aren't being accepted so we can reach out to them and make sure this is fixed.

              So if you have specific examples of where the card wasn't accepted, that would be super helpful for us! You can either let me know here, or reach out to our support team with this information, and when you attempted the withdrawal and we will take it from there πŸ˜ƒ

                @mathias#145674 Thank you Mathias, this is really helpful and can be added to the Vietnams notes for users with Travel Card. Ill try to locate one as we change cities.

                  @Neihana#145752 Hi Nathan πŸ‘‹, thank you for this, I can share 2 examples for this that might be helpful for you.

                  The first one: on that same place a friend with bunq debit had no issues where the I got below transaction failed:

                  The second one: The Agribank has many ATM and you do pay a fee but still bunq travel failed where bunq debit was fine:

                  Hope that helps and all users can benefit if it gets fixed.

                  Sorry for the long post and thank you for all your help.

                    Hi @DU#145999

                    Wow, and this is the reason we have the best community!! πŸ™Œ

                    Thanks so much for this information, it indeed will be very helpful for us to ensure that other users can use these ATMs! 🌈

                      @Neihana#146218 Thanks Nathan,

                      Hope this helps others looking to explore Vietnam using Bunq Travel Card.

                      cheers

                        Adding this for anyone looking to use the Travel Card to withdraw money from an ATM in Vietnam, Cambodia or Thailand - To this day I did not succeeded in any of those countries. Get yourself a debit bunq along (for cash withdraw) with the Travel/credit one (for post payments) and youll be all set.

                          Hi @DU#147944

                          Just out of curiosity.

                          Did you choose a different option at the ATM regarding the choice between Checking, Saving, Credit and Default account? Did you make a different choice with another card which resulted in the transaction to be completed successfully? Not sure if it will affect the transaction with a bunq card though but I always choose either default or checking account at foreign ATM's with all these different options.

                            @Tim#147947 Hi Tim,

                            I’ve tried all options but nothing changed in the end result. The only cards that Ive manage to get money with are debit ones. Cheers

                              Is the reason for this that the ATMs cannot work with the travel credit card or is the problem on bunq's end?

                                Hi @TimothyAlexander#147973 πŸ‘‹πŸ½

                                One of the main issues we face with ATM acceptance is that some banks/ATMs have yet to update their BIN registry, which means the newer bunq cards (i.e. Travel Card) can have some acceptance issues.

                                We're working with Mastercard to get these updated, but as there are many places where this can be an issue, it's a slow process to have these up to date. That's why it's great if these issues are continued to be reported so we can reach out to these banks specifically to make sure that we get the best acceptance possible! 🌈

                                  @Neihana#148086 Oh okay! I did not know that ATMs have a BIN registry that needs to be updated for every card to work. Imho, that does not seem like a good thing for new banks at all

                                    @TimothyAlexander#148089 Indeed, it can be quick problematic. To be fair, the vast majority of banks keep these up to date as they are of course wanting cards to be accepted, but it's not always in the case in various countries around the world!
