  • "CO2 free in less than 2 years" claim

I would be really interested in hearing the backing of this. How exactly will the SuperGreen subscription make me CO2 "free"? I could not find an explanation of this anywhere, and since bunq already claims this three times in just their SuperGreen subscription announcement post, I'd love to hear the reasoning behind this.

@Wietze#153021 It's probably some calculation. "The trees we plant through our partner Eden Reforestation Projects capture 308kg CO2 over their 25-year life span" https://www.bunq.com/blog/heres-how-you-helped-us-plant-over-70-000-trees-in-just-3-months

So they're saying that the average user plants enough trees in 2 years now with the new subscription model where every card payment counts, that it's enough CO2 captures to offset you for your whole life? Let's go with these numbers: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_carbon_dioxide_emissions_per_capita 9500 kg of CO2 emissions per Dutchie per year means that you'd need to plant 31 trees to offset one year.

Wait, I need CO2 to maintain the pH of my blood! Not to mention that CO2 is what plants need to grow...! Just kidding of course. But I would really like to know what this means, I mean I can't possibly be living on a private (flying) jet, get bunq supergreen and tout my CO2 free-ness ;)

I'm really curious about this as well. I love the claim but automatically get suspicious when I can't find documentation. I sadly couldn't find an answer to how the metal card is sourced either and how it's supposed to be more sustainable than the regular card.

I think it's a very misleading claim and probably not even legal by Dutch ad standards. I mean if you think about it in this example:
Let me buy gas for my SUV for 2 years using the green card... That doesn't make the gas green or make my life CO2 free.

          It's called off-setting your CO2 for a reason. It's just to compensate.

I do think it's a nice idea and easy way to make your life/expenses greener. But I also think it's a prime example of greenwashing and misleading people into thinking they are saving the world.

@Wietze#153021 You asked an excellent question and it is pretty sad to see that no official statement has been given yet. This claim reminds me of greenwashing as well. Bunq employees had plenty of time to remove comments, close whole topics and post some sugarcoating comments about the recent policy change, but answering a sincere question...

@ImLennart#156321 Please keep in mind that bunq employees don't often write messages here, and certainly not every question.

@TimothyA#156333 Of course, and that is understandable, but seeing the current situation they should more than ever show dedication to showing they care about customer satisfaction, and that includes answering such questions, in my opinion. To me it just adds oil to the fire that they're not.

@ImLennart#156335 But they are paying their employees to do their job, and that is certainly not answering every question in a forum (Together) that is supposed to be guarded by voluntary moderators. These moderators cannot give important or in fact any statements on behalf of bunq. Hope this makes sense to you.

@TimothyA#156338 You're right. Instead they're paying their employees to remove comments and close topics while sugarcoating the situation through damage-controlling comments, instead of being honest and straightforward about the policy change and giving a sincere apology like the people deserve.

                    "Bank of The Free"

@ImLennart#156343 On that huge shitstirm they had to do something, but they can't answer every question. Actually they did not answer many questions at all. They just removed duplicate topics and so on. But you can't and you certainly shouldn't expect an answer from an employee on a Together thread, especially since there have been many threads going on since yesterday 11am...

The message implies that within two years, the average human CO2 footprint for life is being compensated.

For Germans, that would mean about 11.000 kg per year. Average life expectancy is about 80 years. I highly doubt, by whatever calculation used, that two years of average card usage would result in a compensation of 880.000 kg CO2.

Other services that offer certified compensation for 11 tons cost about 100 to 250 Euros per year. Those numbers don’t add up with Supergreen, in my opinion.

@TimothyA#156345 I do expect them to. It’s their board, not a community ran one. Any company that owns their own forum all have a webcare that responds to nearly all questions. Bunq should do so as well. It’s a very little effort, on normal days it isn’t super busy here - the past few days had more activity than you’d normally see here in a year... So now that bunq has fully taken over and defacto dismissed the community mods, it’s time for them to step up and start giving answers. :) Like every other company does as they care about their clients.

@LH-Black-Wolf#156466 Couldn't agree more. It's scary to see legit questions are not being answered while the effort of the mods (including bunq employees) is on keeping the 'positive atmosphere'..
