Dear bunqers, after being with bunq for almost 2 months I am ready to post an honest review. I hope this will help both other customers and bunq.
I’ve been looking for a secondary bank for some time. I am perfectly happy with my traditional Dutch bank, but felt that it lacked some modern and handy features (like mobile payments). And it’s always good to spread risks (last time I changed banks they folded a couple of months later… twice…). bunq seemed like a good candidate and we (me, my wife and my business) took the plunge.
After 2 months, I think that bunq shines in the technological aspect with their banking front end. I find their app convenient, I like the dual pin feature and that I can link my passes to different accounts on the fly. For my business I use auto export, receipt scanning etc., and I’m fine with the costs that go with that. When I reported a feature breaking bug, it was corrected with a new app update within hours. I thought that was very impressive.
I also ran into some strange bugs: after opening our accounts, there were several spelling mistakes in our names, and although support was able to correct this (they blamed their automatic word recognition software), already opened accounts are still bearing incorrectly spelled names. I wonder how that will go with the tax office…
While I’m happy with bunq’s front end, I feel that bunq could improve on their communication and their implementation of changes in their back end. Since I became a customer of bunq, they mixed up their subscriptions twice already, with very confusing communication. The fact that our subscription costs would go up from € 19.98 (Joint, Business) to € 35.97 a month (2x Premium, Supergreen Business) was nowhere to be found in bunq’s correspondence. I was one of the people that were surveyed, and of course I chose to plant trees with all cards and easy subscription models, but I wasn’t asked about giving up my Joint subscription. On top of that, with all these changes we felt we were better off with a Pack, so we changed subscriptions once again.
I understand that bunq’s business model is very different from traditional banks, and that is one of the reasons that I signed up with bunq. And I don’t mind the price I’m paying now. But bunq’s way of communicating can certainly be improved and I hope they will.
About their back end: since all these changes in subscription types, every single overview of running costs for both my business and personal accounts contains incorrect charges. It seems the incorrect charges on my business account are now fixed (after contacting Support 3 weeks in a row – they would correct the running costs and 2 days later it would again show incorrect charges), but I’m still being overcharged on my personal account. I find it a pity that bunq’s back end systems apparently aren’t updated before they introduce one after the other change. It seems rushed or poorly planned.
I sincerely hope that there will be a period of calm with no sudden changes. And when there are changes, that they are clearly communicated and properly implemented. And I will be a happier bunqer for it.
I hope to be a bunqer for a long time, because all in all, there's so much potential in bunq's way of banking.
Have a great day 🌈
