I recently got my kid a +1! My plan was to share the sub-account I have for her (savings for later) read only, and get her a bunq card for her own. Obviously, I assumed that when I provide this account for my kid, I get the parental controls you expect. Especially because in the UI you choose to create a 'Child account' explicitly!
Awesome to have her become a bunqer, but here is what went wrong. Keep in mind that I'm talking about my 11 yr old, and parental controls should be in place if you ask me. I will be referring to the documentation at Create a sub-account for your child.
I realize that my suggestions below are technically very challenging, but they are really thoughts to be given some attention as bunq really needs to nail this product. They listened to bunqers like Bas in Child accounts for premium parents, but at this point all the +1's are the same. Kid accounts really need a different implementation!
Legal ownership of the account and sub-account
Contrary to what it says in the documentation there is no choice when it comes to legal ownership. The kid accepts your invite, registers (which you have to approve as parent) and gets an account in its own name. Then a sub-account (with own IBAN) is created in the childs' name. Your kid has FULL control over who can access the sub-account. You don't have access to it, by default. You can use 'connect' on their mobile phone to share the sub account back to yourself. Your kid, however, can remove the connect with you at any time. They are also able to fully set all parameters of the sub-account as far as I know, including the name, budget/limit settings or whatever. Thay also have control over the account and are able to choose to become premium user (and get billed for it). Same seems to go for their bunq card.
Suggestion for bunq: Have parents make a choice (preferably in their own bunq app) regarding the ownership. At least for kids under e.g. 16, or some reasonable setting.
note: Bunq does seem to register who the parent is, but doesn't seem to do anything with that information besides authorizing the initial account creation process.
No controls regarding the sub account
As I understand now there is also NO parent/child connect relationship anymore. It has been removed earlier, however some claim that it is still somewhat available through the API. (see Parent/child account missing and Parent/child connect.) I have no idea what this type of connect does, but it seems that when you offer a child account, this should be set mandatory! Or at least be a choice for the parent.
Suggestion for bunq: Provide proper parental controls for child accounts and sub-accounts. This should be a basic given, every parent will know exactly what I mean by this.
No other connect types available
I'd like to share a savings sub account with her read only, but that isn't available either. The only option when Connect-ing is 'Full'. I cannot change the type, not when creating the connect (where the choice should be) nor when the connect is created and accepted.
Suggestion for bunq: Make the connect types make sense! I never stopped to think that in 2020 it would be impossible to decide how you want to share access to your sub-accounts.
