  • Can we have discussions in English only

Since this is a multinational community I think everyone should have the opportunity to join an ongoing discussion.
The worst are language changes on english topics. Just why? For my part I would love to understand everything going on.

    When we as a moderator respond to topics written in another language than English, we will try to summarize it for you, so that you will be able to follow along. You can also always use a website translation service like Google Translate and just leave your comment in English 🌎

    But I can of course suggest everything you already said to every other bunqer: If you want the whole community on Together to be able to participate in your topic, keeping it in English will be the easiest way!

        Omdat bunq internationaal is zijn er ook veel bunqrs die geen Nederlands spreken. We proberen zoveel mogelijk discussies in Engels te voeren om ervoor te zorgen dat zoveel mogelijk mensen een discussie kunnen volgen. Maar uiteraard snap ik dat aan de andere kant ook niet iederen Engels spreekt.
        Together is een plek waar iedereen zich welkom zou moeten voel, ook als je geen of onvoldoende Engels spreekt. Schroom dus ook niet om te reageren of een onderwerp aan te snijden in de taal die jij prettig vind!
        We vinden het belangrijk om feedback van iedereen te horen!
        Als ik nog iets voor je kan doen, gil vooral anders een fijn weekeinde.

          I think it'll be hard to shape this behavior, and some people just don't feel comfortable writing in a foreign language.

          Maybe a built-in option to show a machine translation of each post that is written in a language other than my own app language similar to what Facebook does with posts and comments could help?

          I know it's dead-simple to detect which language a post is written in (I've done this before) and there are plenty of excellent translation APIs that do a decent job conveying the essence of a post.

            In English:
            There a several add-ons / pluging for common browsers that could almost instandly translate text parts or whole pages. Do you guys have some tips which ones work the best?

            Er zijn ook diverse plugins voor bekende browsers die vrij keurig snel teksten of hele pagina's kunnen vertalen. Hebben jullie tips?

              Maar als Nederlander heb ik toch het liefst dat er gewoon in het Nederlands tegen mij gepraat wordt, en ik ben daar vast niet de enige in.

                As bunq is marketing the platform in multiple languages they accept the fact that there are multiple languages in use here and that some people speak only one of those. Therefore the posts should have a ‘translate’ button that (using some API) inline-translates the text to the user’s primary language, and back to the original when you hit the button again.

                  @Xander#26383 In that case DeepL would be one of the better options, it has support for most of the European languages and it has a simple API which can be used to integrate it into services and apps.

                  And best of all the results I get from DeepL are way better than those of Google Translate for example.

                    Het lukt mij redelijk om Engels te lezen, maar schrijven is echt een drama. Daarnaast, Bunq heeft een Nederlandse bank vergunning, dus lijkt het mij logisch dat er in het Nederlands gecommuniceerd wordt in Nederland. De suggestie om een translate programma in Bunq te integreren vind ik een goede, mits de vertalingen niet door het vertaal programma opgeslagen worden.

                      bunq is an app originally launched in the Netherlands (or perhaps the launch was worldwide but certainly the company is Dutch and Ali appears on Dutch TV etc.) and not everyone in the Netherlands speaks English just like that. Moreover I think it is a bit arrogant to ask people to speak your language, especially when you can't speak theirs. I think the mods do a good job translating and explaining where necessary as it is. I understand it can be frustrating but imagine what the Dutch-only bunqers go through.

                        Together should never go English only, as some people simply do not master the English language. Topics should continue to be started in whichever language the poster desires (which could also be German, Italian, Spanish etc.).

                        However, I am very much in favour for a more clearly distinguished separation of languages (e.g. with 'flags'). With bunq growing and expending worldwide, I expected the new Together to focus on making Together more clear and structured, for example by having better language / topic filtering. This is something that can still be improved.

                        Together moet nooit een 'English only' forum worden, simpelweg omdat niet iedereen de Engelse taal volledig beheerst. Een topic zou in elke taal gestart moeten mogen worden (dus bijvoorbeeld ook in het Duits, Spaans of Italiaans).

                        Echter, ben ik wel een groot voorstander van een duidelijkere onderverdeling van talen (bijv. d.m.v. vlaggen). Aangezien bunq wereldwijd groeit had ik verwacht dat het nieuwe Together meer gericht zou zijn op het verduidelijken en structureren van de topics, bijv. door het gebruik van betere filters voor talen/onderwerpen. Dit kan echter nog verbeterd worden.
