  • Numbers of planted trees together

To get back to the topic, hey John @JohnDo do you have any idea what the difference between the two different counters of the trees planted together might be?

I am very interested in the sustainable development of bunq and am happy about the prioritization of the trees 🌳. That's why I want to understand it.

The reason the 2 numbers are different is because there isn’t a way to actually tell how many trees you’ve planted, it’s more like an estimate and the two numbers are estimated differently

@zaza#191997 Yes, the counts (perhaps estimates) are different, but on what basis? What is the background?

It is frustrating not to understand.

@Esther-Orange-Unicorn#192009 One is estimated by their engineering team and the other by their marketing team.
The marketing team’s estimate is higher because higher numbers are good for marketing.

For every 100 eur transaction they estimate 1 tree planted. The marketing team estimates it for every 99.1 eur transaction.

I transferred to my friend 1k eur so I have already planted 10 trees.

@Esther-Orange-Unicorn#191955 Sorry for the delay. Mmm I honestly dont know... but let me see if I can find out :D

@Esther-Orange-Unicorn#192009 It is an estimate because the NGO where your money ends up spends about 70-80% of it on salaries, rent, etc. So it really depends if you calculate it with 80% or 70% your total numbers will be different

@JohnDo#192114 That would be great, thanks for your response.

@Esther-Orange-Unicorn#192009 Let’s do an example calculation:

You spend €100, of which ~2% are transaction fees. Bunq takes about 1% which is €1.

They send 5% of this to a tree planting NGO, that’s €0.05.

The NGO uses 80% of this to maintain it’s operations and is left with €0.01.

With that they go and buy tree seeds, which costs about €0.01 a seed if you buy it by the thousands.

So every seed = 1 tree planted.

@zaza#192123 Ok, but this is no explanation / excuse to give us two different counters and lead us to confusion.

@Esther-Orange-Unicorn#192124 Yes just get rid of those numbers altogether, the tree cutting companies plant more trees than anyone else anyways

@Esther-Orange-Unicorn#192119 I asked my friends at bunq and it looks like it should be the same number, the difference seems to be in the frequency with these numbers are updated. That’s why there is a difference.

But of course this now creates confusion so that is why it’s now is registered as a bug! So, when it is fixed both numbers will be the same!

But nevertheless, both numbers are impressive! So we did a great job together!

                                @JohnDo#192205 Thank you John.
So if the update frequency is supposed to be the only / decisive difference, it is especially confusing that at the beginning of a new month the number that is updated more frequently (live) is lower than the number that is only updated at the turn of the month. The other way around it might still be understandable.
Ok, I accept it is a bug and hope for a fix of bunq.

@Esther-Orange-Unicorn#192256 Anytime for one of my favourite bunqers ;).... bunq agrees with you so they will look into that and fix it!
