  • Mobile Payment: Choosing bank account account while paying

Hello community, my name is Tobias and I'm thinking to switch my bank to bunq.

Currently I have 3 accounts. 1. For fix costs(rental, insurance) , 2. Variable costs (supermarket, gas) 3.Fun stuff (restaurant, fashion).

My goal is that when I pay with my phone in a store that I can directly choose the category and the relevant account from which the payment should be made. Is this possible with bunq?

@New-Cyan-Starfish-1965559618#192664 You can always change the account that is connected to a card through the app. But you would have to change it before doing a payment.

Thank you for your answer Jakob. So the payment is done with bunq app, right? Is there a video how it is done?

And when I'm doing the payment can I set the category (e. g. Restaurant) and see automatically the left budget of this category?

@New-Cyan-Starfish-1965559618#192695 The payment you can do however you want. With a physical card, Apple Pay/Google Pay or on Android also with the bunq App itself (the feature is called Tap & Pay then).

Just to make sure we're not conflating anything here, 1) you can have different sub-accounts for different purposes (all with their own IBAN), 2) and there is also the feature called Insights, which let's you assign categories to your expenses (from a pre-defined list that is not editable).

For 1): You can select any of your cards and assign them / connect them to a different sub-account whenever you want. While they're connected to a certain account, all purchases that you then make with that card, be it with the physical card or via a phone, will get deducted from that account. So before you go to the supermarket (or while waiting in line at the checkout), you could get out your phone and connect one of your cards to your sub-account that you only use for Groceries spending. Then when you pay with that card at the supermarket, the money will get deducted from that account. But let's say you make a mistake and you pay at the supermarket checkout with the card still connected to another sub-account of yours, then you cannot change that back. The payment has already been made and deducted from that account. The only thing you can do then is transfer money between your accounts.

For 2): The Insights feature is not real budgeting, it merely allows you to track your expenses. On the [Profile] tab you will be able to see a monthly pie chart that shows how much you have spend in certain categories. The good thing here is that you can always change the category that a certain payment is assigned to, and the payments are also automatically assigned to a fitting category. What you cannot do is set a certain spending limit or goal to such a category.

        Does that make it clearer?

Yes this makes it clearer. The sub accounts work as "budgets". You automatically transfer each month your monthly budget on one of you sub accounts. Left money from previous months summ up and when money on account is over budget is over. Budgeting like in other apps is actually not necessary.

Simoultaneously I can switch the connection of cards and the tap to pay feature in the app to the accounts. How is this feature working when I have a Partner account. I want to open 1 account for my wife and myself, where everybody has its own cards and can decides independently the connection of his cards to our accounts. Is this possible?

@MaisAmore#192786 Yes, each one of you will be able to link his/her cards to the shared or personal accountd independently. My wife and I are doing exactly that.
Bunq is really good at that.

@MaisAmore#192786 Also there is a dual pin functionality which allows to choose which account will be used according to the PIN you use while paying. It will not work with all payment terminals though.

Thanks Manuek, I'm just testing the tap & Pay features and this is really great. Gone are the question can we afford to go to restaurant tonight or do we have to eat at home? Sub account plus choosing before payment which one will be charged and we have the answer!

When using your cards in a wallet (applepay/googlepay) on your phone or watch you might as well add several virtual bunq cards (free) with coloured lines to distinguish them. I have about 8 different cards for specific purposes.
