  • User experience NFC payment with pin on Android

Hi,

Since covid-19 I'm using PIN for tap & pay payments with phone since face recognition with mask doesn't make sense. I noticed that the user experience has a quirk in here.

Reproduction:
- With locked phone tap the shops payment terminal
- Bunq app opens requesting 4 digit PIN
- Type in the pin and the 4 bubbles gets filled in
- No nothing happens anymore, the screen is stuck.
- When now tapping the terminal again it seems like the payment gets approved. There is no visible feedback or vibration that something happened when tapping the terminal. This is confusing as you think the payment doesn't work and this is inconvenient in a shop when there is a line of people behind you waiting.

What I expect:
After typing in the 4 digit code I expect a new screen with something like tap the terminal again. And when it actually made the NFC payment I expect some more visual or vibration for feedback.

Note:
In one case after typing in the pin code it did show the next screen of make the payment now by tapping terminal.

Device: Pixel 4
OS: Android 10
Bunq: 14.5.1

Cheers,
Co

I have strictly been using Tap & Pay since opening a Bunq account back in March and have not had any issues with the feature other than the occasional hiccup (there have been about 3 or 4) with the store's payment terminal which required me to go through the steps again. But other than that, the feature has been superb. In fact, since one of the app updates in June, I haven't had any hiccups with the Tap & Pay feature.

To be completely honest, I haven't even used my Bunq debit card ONCE to pay for anything since I received it back in March. Every payment, even for Uber rides, has been through the NFC feature of my Android phone.

In case you haven't read the guide on Tap & Pay, read it here; https://together.bunq.com/d/3416-how-do-i-use-android-tap-pay-nfc

You'll find that there are THREE different ways of utilizing the Tap & Pay feature, one of which involves an Android widget which you can place on your homescreen, or wherever you like, so you don't have to open the Bunq app at all; simply tap the Bunq Tap & Pay widget, authenticate via fingerprint or code and you are done. This is what I do and it's incredibly quick and smooth. I highly recommend it.

And as for feedback while paying, my phone vibrates when the payment is done. I get a purple screen which says Done with a check mark along with a strong vibration on my phone notifying me that the payment has been made. Not sure if it's phone specific or operating system dependent but that's how it is for me.

My phone is a Samsung Galaxy M20 with nothing customized. The Android version is 8.1.0.

Anyway, that has been my experience, for whatever it's worth.

      Hi ik,

Thank you for your two cents on this one.

It didn't notice this since I was in Italy on Holiday and had set a pin in stead of face recognition since you have to wear a mask inside shops.

The face recognition works flawless, the pin has issues. It is reproduced via this way:

      • When doing a payment in a shop make sure your phone is locked but the screen is on. Beware not to unlock it pet accident quickly via face unlock.

      • Then tap the terminal. The locked phone with screen on will start the Bunq payment and asks the pin.

      • Punch in the pin code and for me almost most times it stops here. The pin filled in, no other screen.

      • Then I noticed when tapping the terminal again to test the payment was ok, but there was still no feedback in the app: no vibration nor the payment was successful visual feedback.

      Android 10
      Pixel 4 phone

I've tried now 3 times back in Holland to reproduce this behaviour, but couldn't. Note that in Italy there is bad internet connection. Not sure if that could be a cause.
