What's the difference between Local IBAN and Local Currency?
Local IBANs
Local IBANs are IBANs based on the local Dutch, German, French and Spanish banking metrics and operate in Euro. This means that you open a Bank Account with one of our local branches and your IBAN matches the nationality you've chosen. You can see more on how the Local IBANs work here.
Important note: All the Bank Accounts you open within the app, no matter of the country code in the IBAN, are supported and opened by bunq NL.
Local Currencies
Local Currencies is a feature which gives you the opportunity to send, receive and pay in one of the many local currencies we currently provide. For example, you can have a South African Rand local currency account, but not a South African IBAN. When you open a Local Currencies Bank Account, you're getting a GB IBAN since the foreign currency isn't held in the Netherlands, but in the UK. You can learn all about operating with this cool feature here.
Good to know
- If you've been through an iDnow verification flow already - you won't repeat the verification process for your Local IBAN
- This feature isn't available for minors, meaning that you must be at least 18 years old in order to use this feature
- The currently-available countries for local IBANs are Germany, France, Spain, Ireland and the Netherlands π
