• Are you not legally obliged to accept ID cards of ALL EU countries?

Hello community,

Do we know why is Bunq not accepting ID cards of some countries to verify one's identity? One would think that they are obliged to accept it, whatever their opinion of given country and / or government is.

@New-Blue-Hog-958040857#297696 All citizens of the European Economic Area that are residents in the countries that bunq operates (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden) can sign up for bunq.

Banks in the Netherlands are required to verify the identity of their customers, but they are not obliged to accept all types of identification documents. They can determine which documents they accept, such as a passport, identity card, or driver's license.

Banks are not required to accept all identity cards due to their freedom of contract and the need to comply with regulations such as the Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing (Prevention) Act (Wwft). This law requires banks to conduct a risk-based client assessment, allowing them to determine which identity documents they accept in order to meet these obligations. As a result, banks may choose not to accept certain documents if they believe that these do not provide sufficient assurance regarding the customer's identity.

I have found the link you are referencing, hence have raised this question. Thank you for clarifying the banks position for me. I will be asking my local regulator about validity of this claim.
