If you donât have enough funds in your account to cover an invoice, your balance may drop below zero.
What happens when you have a negative balance?
Once your account balance falls into the negative, weâll notify you via in-app reminder and email. If your balance remains negative for 14 days, weâll automatically switch your plan to bunq Free. Some accounts arenât eligible to switch to the bunq Free plan. If this is the case, and you donât top up your balance for 30 days, weâll freeze your account.
What makes my account ineligible for bunq Free?
Your account is not eligible to be switched to the bunq Free plan if:
- You have an active Joint Account;
- Youâre managing a Child Account as a parent;
- You have Business Account for a business thatâs not freelance;
- If you have a Foreign Currency Account with funds deposited.
What will happen with my account?
How do I resolve my negative balance?
- You can transfer money to your IBAN from one of your other accounts that has enough balance.
- You can also use one of the other top-up methods to add money to your bunq account.
Once youâve topped up your account, you can switch back to your previous plan by following these steps:
- Go to đ¤ Profile
- Tap on Plans
- Select Switch plan
Important: Keep in mind that closed Bank Accounts and cards wonât reopen automaticallyâyouâll need to reactivate them manually.

How can I reopen my closed Bank Accounts and cards?
- Go to the đ Home Tab
- Tap on Archived under your Bank Accounts and cards
- Tap on Bank Accounts or Cards
- Choose the Bank Account or card in question
- Go to âď¸Settings
- Tap on đ˘ Reopen account
