  • Acceptance Germany: Maestro vs Mastercard

@Lars-Olive-Kiwi#49332 Nimm doch einfach beide mit... 🤔

In Germany, the acceptance of both cards is given. Both Maestro and MasterCard. I have never come across a load that accepts only one type.

There will be plenty of stores that take maestro but not mastercard.

@Lars-Olive-Kiwi#49332 The best answer is probably: it depends. There is no proper answer for all of Germany, you have to look in your region what works best for you.

@yllwfsh#49478 Go to the Cinestar Cinema at the Sony Center in Berlin. One of the few cinemas in Berlin that shows movies in English, so a lot of international customers.

          They only accept Girocard.......

Bei Aldi Süd und bei Real hat es mit der MasterCard und Apple Pay ohne Probleme funktioniert.

Bei Lidl ging es heute morgen nicht, muss ich nochmal testen.

Just for clarification. Maestro is a MasterCard product. And if the store accepts credit cards at all, they will accept maestro. For German supermarkets I can say, that stores like Rewe, Aldi or Lidl all accept credit cards. Penny Markt doesn't. Just look for the Girocard logo or the older and more familiar EC or EC-Cash logos. Usually you find them at the entrance of the store. When you see only that you can't pay with your maestro or your credit card.

@Milion-Grey-Falcon#50600 Penny does accept maestro and by the end of this year all penny’s will accept MasterCard and apple pay too.

@Lexa-kom-Trikru#50604 Yes you are right. I forgot to mention that penny accepts debit but not credit cards at this point.

I was in a Deutsche Post location yesterday and they did not accept Mastercard or Maestro. After trying both my bunq cards (contactless, chip and mag stripe) and Apple Pay with no luck I finally resorted to cash. They were a Postbank location as well which makes it extra sad

In my experience, there are three types of merchants: cash only, cash&Girocard, and sane, where by sane I mean merchants accepting at least Girocard, MC, Maestro, VISA, VPay and cash. I don’t know any location accepting only Maestro or MC here, and the first to types are thankfully getting less and less with time..

@Roeshimi#49471 Wait so you can’t pay with Apple Pay on such locations either?

@LH-Black-Wolf#51326 No you can’t. Apple Pay gives you a virtual card, but it’s still a MasterCard or Maestro card.

@Peter-Danger-Mouse#51283 At Deutsche Post, the Maestro card works! I already used the Applepay virtual Maestro from bunq ✅
