• Using the MasterCard in a plane

Well, I know that the payment terminal has to be connected to the internet for the card to be accepted. But somehow they manage to accept cards on planes e.g. ryanair where there of course is no interent available when youre flying in the sky.

My question is, can I then also pay there? Does anyone have any experience with this or does anyone from the Bunq team know? Right now I'm too scared to get my card out on planes for fear of it not working.

I know the N26 debit MasterCard works on a plane. Maybe they have satalite internet? I would not be at all embarrassed about the payment failing, merchants deal with cards failing all the time. Just bring backup cash.

I did pay at a Transavia flight to Marrakesh with my MasterCard. Took a couple of days before it was seducted but it worked fine.

Most planes have internet on board. Some even WiFi for the passengers.

N26 has Service Code 201 and thus allow offline transactions bunq has 221 which forces an online transaktion like a prepaid card. N26 also know exactly who you are via IDnow. So they give you an UCOL (Upper Consecutive Offline Limit) at 50€

Wouldn’t it be possible to pre-authorize an amount of money. You block this in my account and setup the card that it limits transactions to this amount while offline. This way I’d never spend any money that I don’t have.

Example: British airlines has no WiFi in Europe and doesn’t allow cash, so no drinks during the flight. Ridiculous policy.

              Hey guys! 🙌

This is actually a tricky one, since every airline owns their own policy about how their terminals work during a flight. 🛫

Currently, a lot of terminals during a flight are offline. However, some of them will allow our cards to work even when offline, and process this payment once the terminal is back online. In other occasions, they might already make clear that payments with MasterCard or Maestro are not possible, or only offline payments with VISA or a credit card are allowed. 💳

However, it is really hard to tell from our side since every airline is free to choose their payment policy.

Regarding the chosen countries, this also changes depending on the airline: some of them will enable the country of origin of the airline, while some others might have global settings so it can work everywhere. Even different terminals in the same airline can hold different settings. 🌍

Since most airlines don't hold any information about their paying terminals in their website, we would love it if every bunqer could give their own input about your own experiences with different airlines, so the rest of the bunqers can benefit from them.

I travelled myself from Amsterdam to Barcelona with Transavia, and they didn't take any debit card, only credit cards. In this case, to be in the safe side, I would bring a payment alternative (cash or credit card) for these cases!

Having flown on Ryanair between STN - TLN my experience was one transaction successful and another declined and each terminal was configured differently. One was obviously configured as being in UK or Estonia but the other was configured as Ireland and hence declined as I had not added that country.
