Are you getting an error message when you try to close your account? That's because not all the conditions for closure are satisfied. If you don't meet one of the conditions, you can easily correct it by following the steps below. Just make sure to check the relevant section for the error message that you're getting from the bunq app 👌

The balance on your account isn't exactly €0,00

  • If you have excessive funds on the account, you can just tap on the Pay button in the Accounts menu, and transfer the remaining funds to a different bank account

  • If you have a negative balance, make sure to top-up your account to bring the balance back to 0

There are payments scheduled from your account

  • If you have scheduled payments, you can remove them when you go to your Events menu > Scheduled Payments icon

  • When you tap on a Scheduled Payment, you'll see an option to cancel it

There are pending Requests for the account

  • If you have pending requests, you can find them through the filter feature: go to your Events menu > Search bar > Filter icon > select 'Open Requests to others' > Apply

  • You can then see the option to cancel or close the pending requests when you tap on them

There are pending bunq.to payments for the account

  • If you have pending bunq.to payments, you can find them through the filter feature: go to your Events menu > Search bar > Filter icon > choose to filter for 'Paid' amounts and for transactions in the last week > Apply

  • What you're looking for is a payment to a phone number or email address - just tap on it to see the option cancel the payment

There are no pending iDEAL deposits for the account

  • Pending iDEAL deposits will expire when they're inactive for too long - just try again later to close your bank account

The account is linked to one or more of your cards

  • Go to your Cards menu, and make sure that all cards are connected to a different account from the one you want to close

  • If one of your cards was ordered from the bank account that you're closing, you'll have to permanently block the card: go to Cards > tap on the card you need to block > Deactivate or Block > Block Card (note: the card can't be temporarily deactivated but needs to be permanently blocked)

There are active Connects for the account

  • If you have active Connects, go to your Accounts menu > tap on the bank account > Settings > Connects > tap on Active Connects > Stop Connect

The account is selected as your billing account

  • If you're trying to close your Billing Account, you'll have to select a different account for billing first: Tap on your Profile in the top left corner > Settings > My Plans > Billing Account > choose a different bank account for billing

  • Note that you can only close your Billing Account if this is the only active bunq bank account that you have
