  • [Bug] Fix Payment Categories in Spending Insights

I like the Spending Insights tab, but never used it because no matter how much time I invest into fixing the auto-assigned payment categories, it continues to make the same mistakes, which makes this feature useless.

Here are a few example of errors:

  1. Payments to IKEA BV are auto-mapped to "Groceries". Should be "Household Expenses" or similar
  2. Payments to NS Groep and OV-Chipkaart are auto-mapped to "Groceries" too. Should be "Travel".
  3. Payments to KPN BV are auto-mapped to "Groceries". Should be "Subscriptions" or "Electronics" maybe.
  4. Payments to Gemeente X are auto-mapped to "Groceries". This one is hard, but it should be a category related to "Parking".
  5. I change the payment category of one payment in the "Groceries" overview, click "All similar payments". That payment and all similar payments to the same account stay in the "Groceries" tab. Even force-closing the app and restarting it doesn't change this mapping. If I choose "Only this payment", that particular payment moves to the correct category, but the others stay in the wrong category.

My suggestion would be to:

  1. Fix the obvious bugs like actually moving all similar payments to the new category (See 5)
  2. Fix obvious auto-mappings like 1) and 2)
  3. Actually LEARN from manual category changes like in 3)
  4. Don't auto-map payments that are not obvious like 4). I much rather like to have an "unmapped" category where I can fix the mappings myself than having to go through every category and fix the errors.

    @New-Indigo-Impala-1133621467#275852 hey, no these were one-off payments.

      @Magnificent-Peter#275838 Hi Peter,

      Please note we’ve already reported this bug -where the categories of incoming, and outgoing payments stay the same after modifying them - to our developers and will let you know once the issue is fixed 😊

        17 days later

        I have the same issue. Searching through the community I also found similar reports as early as 2019. Is there an estimate for when this will be fixed?

          @Acomedido#276445 No, bunq doesn't give estimations. But 17 days ago, they said they're working on it!

            5 months later

            @bunqVitaly#275860 is this still a bug? I guess it worked fine till a couple of days ago, I can update the payment but it is not shown correct in the insights tab, and also it took the money from the wrong accounts due to this mapping issue

              Hey there, @DiegoT#283036 πŸ‘‹
              While the issue you've encountered is still an active bug, please know that we're diligently working on a solution. Once it's fixed, we'll make sure to announce it to our users πŸ™Œ

                This is still massively broken.
                The UX when assigning a category to payments also got worse after the update - changing a category now features two mandatory taps, with the annoying "only this payment" or "all similar payments" pop-up every time.

                Also, can anyone tell me what "similar transactions" are? I can not reverse-engineer the logic, and it doesn't seem like it's on a per-merchant basis, neither does it look like it's done based on amount, day of the month or description.

                  @ayy-baby#283363 Hello JM πŸ‘‹

                  Thanks for reaching out 🌈 We apologize for any inconvenience it has caused. To clarify, "similar transactions" are categorized based on the merchant. However, we acknowledge that there may be inconsistencies. Our team is aware of this and is actively working on resolving the issue. Your feedback is valuable to us, and we'll strive to improve the user experience. Thank you for bringing this to our attention πŸ™
